History:
Major spoiler warnings for D.Gray-man. Haven't watched or read it to the latest episode or chapter? Then it's best you don't read. Hey, I warned ya.
A lot of Lavi's past is completely unknown, as it should be due to him being the next Bookman in line. The only thing known about it is that he's been with Bookman for a long time now, but it is also unknown when that long time started.
He was first introduced into the series after Allen, Miranda, and Lenalee all fought against Road and her Akuma minions. The first and third had sustained severe injuries, and both were hospitalized after Miranda stopped her Innocence from stopping their wounds from coming back. Lavi had been 'chilling' and leaning off the wall in the room that Allen was in, shortly before Bookman decided to come into it. After hearing Allen worry about Lenalee, he jumped into the conversation that Komui and Allen were having. "She'll be fine, gramps is taking care of her." he stated, smiling gently. I'm Lavi, nice to meetcha."
Lavi simply stood there, quieting down and watching Allen leave the room to see Lenalee, before coming down after him at a relaxed and calm pace. Now, by this time, you would think that he'd be the calmest person on the entire planet, just like a gentle flowing stream of water.. Well, think again. During the time in which Allen and Komui were talking, he hid behind a stack of paper that the crazy man had and poked his nose out, replying to another's question yet again, this one's being Allen's, though. After the two calmed down from being creeped out, the orange-haired boy began to explain about the newly met foe, the Noah.
Hidden from history, yet involved with it, yes.. The Noah, the family with hidden roots. He went on to start explaining about Bookmen, however his words were cut short when a certain panda-faced man hit Lavi in the face with a flying kick, sending him into a pile of books and paper. When Bookman scolded Lavi by telling him not to reveal things about Bookman until he was one, the temporary Exorcist just shrugged it off and joked by saying "What's the big deal? I'm gonna take over for you soon, anyways."
After this, Lavi and Allen were in essence kicked out of the room and silence took over until they decided to head outside into the Winter day. The first question asked was asked by Lavi, as to Allen's age. The redhead just laughed off himself being older, and then introduced his (probably) most popular nickname, Junior, which was referring to him being the "junior" Bookman. He questioned jokingly if he could call Allen a "moyashi," "beansprout," or anything pertaining to those words. The conversation just went on randomly, to Lavi calling Kanda by his first name, Yu. "Next time, call him Yu. Just watch his eyes bulge."
It took a turn for the serious when Lavi brought up the Noah and the next fight that they were going to have to deal with. It was gonna be tough, and the two knew it. He just tried to calm down the grim mood by telling Allen to just not worry about it until the time came. It didn't help, and it just got the cursed boy worked up again about his purpose for becoming an Exorcist and hunting Akuma. In a last attempt, he asked what was wrong and called Allen a bean sprout, just causing the white-haired male to walk off. In secret, Lavi followed him through the crowd while being prepared for any sort of Akuma attack.
It happened a lot quicker than Lavi expected, and the poor Allen was stuck without his eye and had a short paranoia attack before being attacked by an Akuma while he was off-guard. It held its gun to his head, and his fate was seemingly sealed until our little hero boy came to the rescue and destroyed it with his oversized hammer. "It's dangerous, standing there like a sitting duck on a crowded street. They'll get you from behind when you least expect it. Don't think that they're humans just because you look at 'em and they look human. You can't use your eye now, huh?" he stated and later questioned, shrinking his hammer. Too bad, he had let his guard down for only a short time and they were attacked again from behind.
Lavi whipped out Ōzuchi Kozuchi and twirled it around before catching it. "Ban, ban.. Ban!" The hammer was at least four times the size of Lavi at this point, which freaked out Allen for a moment before he slammed an Akuma into a nearby building, obliterating it instantly.. Along with the building. After the overkill, his hammer shrunk back to normal size and was nearly arrested by an "officer".. Except, you see, it wasn't an officer. Quite obvious. Lavi proved this to Allen by threatening to exorcise it with his hammer, and the battle commenced.
Its chest formed a gun, and it blasted missiles at the two. In a swift motion, Lavi twirled his hammer around in its compact form to deflect or render useless any bullets aimed at him, while he barely noticed out of the corner of his eye Allen's arm being activated. "Backup? Looks like these bastards are here to shoot us!" Though acting like captain obvious, Lavi had no time to say much more since the two ran to a dead end. However, the two jumped over the obstacle quickly and kept running, finding themselves both in a train station.
"Man, your reaction time is slow, Allen. If you wait for the Akuma to change before activating, you're gonna get killed." A short apologetic word from Allen, and they continued through the station quickly. "Lavi, how did you know?" he questioned, referring to the Akuma who disguised himself as a policeman. "I dunno, I guess. I'm suspicious of everyone. I'm always suspicious of everything around me. Someone I met just the other day ago, they could be an Akuma today. It's the nature of the war. Ya gotta understand that, Allen. We're at a huge disadvantage."
The two found themselves now surrounded by men, obviously all Akuma. Standing back to back, the two watched the other demons slowly step forth, before Lavi continued. "We're different than you are. You see, we don't all have eyes like that convenient one of yours at our disposal. The other Exorcists and I, we gotta look at everyone as if they're Akuma." A quick surprised look was flashed by Allen, but Lavi's words were cut short when a powerful explosion separated the two. Allen shouted for the other Exorcist, and the Bookman assured Allen from a distance that he was fine.
"Come 'n get it." From then on out, things went quite quickly on Lavi's end. Allen began to simply think about Lavi's words and his master, Cross, but in the meantime the redhead was trying to destroy as many Akuma as possible. "Ōzuchi Kozuchi.. Ban, ban, ban!" His hammer grew to an incredible size, and Lavi threw it down onto a group of Akuma while they were still shifting to their true forms, killing them instantly. A missile from the back whizzed by, forcing the eighteen year old to shorten his hammer and duck for cover from inside a train that was tipped over. He had to hide from the attacks so that he had time to formulate a plan inside his head. After all, thinking and dodging life-threatening missiles is hard, huh?
Multiple explosions sounded from the top of the train, which was the side of it if you looked at it as if it was sitting upright. He knew it was a group of missiles colliding with the train, but all would be silent after a couple seconds of waiting for the Akuma to 'chill out'. Using Gouka Kaijin in a place like this, it would probably do more harm than good since Allen could get caught up in the blast of fire and get fried.. And after all, he would essentially demolish the entire trainyard if he did such a brainless act.
'Alright then,' he thought to himself, waiting for a moment while listening carefully to the Akuma. If he counted right, there were at least 25 Akuma left out of the 37 that had followed him. A great amount had been destroyed when he had sized up his hammer earlier. But now, Lavi had a good idea as far as what to do went. He poked his head up and saw an Akuma up top, nodding. The boy jumped up high into the air, landing on the train. "Shin! Ban!" Combining an extension with sizing his hammer larger, he smashed through 7 Akuma before shortening it again and diving behind the train for cover from a couple missiles.
And since I'm lazy.. essentially, they beat the Akuma, and met Crowley in his mansion place. Then Allen and Lavi met up with Lenalee and got on a boat to Edo, but were stopped partway through thanks to Akuma. Lavi helped Lenalee look for Allen after the battle but couldn't find him. They came to Japan with an Akuma nicknamed Chomesuke by Lavi, and fought some Noah and Akuma. Then some other stuff happened and now all the Exorcists including Lavi got moved to another base. Oh yeah, and Lavi got turned into a 10 year old. But then he got turned back into an 18 year old. And then after that happened, some light flashed and he found himself on an island. Yeah. It's like that.
Personality:
Lavi is an incredibly cheerful eighteen year old who has a habit of bugging people. He loves to give other nicknames and it's probably one of his main distinguishing personality traits. He'll call Allen beansprout or moyashi because 'if Kanda can, and he's my same age, then I can too.' Crowley's called Crow-chan, Kuro-chan, Crowlykins, and Crow. Lavi also calls Kanda 'Yu,' his first name. It tends to get on the Japanese Exorcist's nerves and it does so easily.. Too bad for Kanda, this whole nickname business probably isn't going to change anytime soon.
Lavi acts straightforward at times, though this can just be for comical reasons. Whenever he sees a woman 'his type,' (which in essence is either a cute girl, older woman, or someone with large breasts) he'll shout out "strike!" and hearts will appear in his eyes. Afterwards, Lavi'll probably just be stuck flirting with the girl until he gets rejected or has sense knocked into him by another person which is, in all honesty, a hard thing to do. At other times that are more serious, he tries to express his feelings about things in a direct manner whether considered rude or not at the time he says whatever he says. (Spoilah)
Despite what Lavi should be acting like as a Bookman, (emotionless, detached from everything) he seems to have trouble keeping himself unbiased and neutral as far as emotions go. On a random note, he seems to be very playful around others. Once, when on a train with Kanda and Allen, he had scribbled all over Allen's face with a marker and braided up Kanda's hair without thought of perhaps being at the end of a sword a moment later. Yup, that's Lavi for you. Predictable.
Weapon:
Ōzuchi Kozuchi, "big hammer small hammer." It's the name for his hammer, and it's named pretty well. At his command, Lavi may shrink or extend, enlargen or make small his hammer. Because it's his weapon, he isn't affected by the weight change that it presents when he enlargens it.
Power/s:
When Lavi wishes, he may summon forth an elemental circle
火 Hi Ban: Gouka Kaijin
Lavi picks out the orb with the kanji on it for fire, being "hi" and smacks it down with his hammer. Upon being slammed onto the ground, a massive snake of flames forms.
天 Ten Ban: Raitei Kaiten
Lavi finds the seal with the first of two kanji for 'heaven,' being 'ten' and pounds it onto the ground. Afterwards, a powerful lightning storm is invoked.
木 Moku Ban: Tenchi Bankai
Lavi picks out the circle with 'moku' on it, Japanese for wood. He may decide to slam it down or not, but in any case, after this, he can control nature for a while.
[x] Konbo Ban: Gouraiten
Lavi combines the seals for fire and heaven and brings forth a powerful lightning and fire snake. He may also use it as a barrier.
This doesn't count as a power or weapon or anything, but Lavi is the next in line to be a 'Bookman.' A Bookman, in essence, is a person who stays unbiased and disconnected from everything, existing only to write down the events at hand. Wars that never make it into history books? Events that never reach the light of day? Those are the things a Bookman records.

Sample RP:
Lavi sighed.
It was late at night, and he was simply restless. Sure, this was probably caused by all the chaos spawned lately with the Level Four and Headquarters was starting to swirl about in the redhead's mind. He was useless when it came to fighting lately, and this rather annoyed him. He wanted to help out his friends with fighting the Akuma, even if it was against what Bookmen did to have any emotional attachments to anyone. He pushed away the thought, sitting up out of his bed now and closing his eyes, simply thinking.
A bolt of lightning was audible to his ears. While it was plenty loud, it was probably not loud enough to wake anyone up.. Just able to be heard by those already awake, if there were any others still up besides Lavi. He was no longer fighting, due to his Innocence shattering and killing him a while back, and even now it was still taking some time to be recovered. Of course, it was pure torture for the Bookman-in-training, since it forced him to simply think and do nothing else.
No distracting himself from his thoughts, no escape. He had to think. Lavi was far from stupid, but in all honesty, thoughts were the things that tugged at his mind and threatened to rip it apart without remorse. "Why am I even thinking about it? I'm a Bookman, things like this, though.." Friends and attachments to others - they were really hard to keep oneself from. For some reason.. He had met Kanda, Allen, Lenalee, and the others at the Black Order, and had formed an emotional bond with them. Did he fail as a Bookman, already, when he wasn't even an official Bookman yet?
Maybe he just needed sleep.
