Age: Mid twenties

History:
Before Death: " Born in the late years of the Azuchi-Momoyama period, Naki was born from the relationship between a Dutch explorer and one of many Japanese concubines. Raised by the concubine and a priest at a temple in Edo (present day Tokyo), Naki trained in both the spiritual and martial arts.
As a teenager, he joined the forces of Tokugawa Ieyasu and was selected to be groomed as a samurai. He first saw action at the Battle of Sekigahara (1600) and aided in the start of the Edo period. Following his first battle, Naki married Kuroda Chiaki, a girl from his home. He was soon blessed with twin girls - Kumiko and Aori - and lived peacefully for a few years as a trusted warrior of the Shogun. But as all things usually go, his peace was not destined to last.
Upon returning from the victory at the Battle of Osaka (1615) he was greeted with the sight of his home in ruins and his family slaughtered. Overwrought by the guilt of leaving his family defenseless and the grim realization of his brutal actions in the past, the once great samurai turned his back on battle and enveloped himself in drinking. His logic dictated that he could drown out his memories and hide himself away in the dark corners of any bar he could find."
-Excerpt from "The Rise and Fall of the Lightning Samurai" by Hidaku Takeru
Naki's Journal
"October 20th, 1600. Tomorrow we take Sekigahara. Tokugawa-sama expects great things from us. I'm just not sure if we can do it...we're up against incredible odds here. But if we somehow manage to win then the path to power over all of Nippon shall be within our grasp. Our swords shall carve our place in history. The other men speak of their wives and lovers back home. Never have I felt so alone...
I tried to write to Chiaki-chan again today but I faltered and failed as I always do. Its funny, I have so little fear about going into battle for the first time and yet...I can't admit my feelings to one girl. They teach us all to fight without fear but never have we been instructed in the combat of the heart.
Should this be my last record I wish for this to be given to her. Maybe in death I will be strong enough to let her know how I feel..."
"January 28th 1605 - Only a short entry today, I have little time before the wedding. I still can't believe I am about to do this. I feel even more nervous then when the Shogun-daiyo appointed me to his personal unit. Still I must go, it would be horrid to be late to my own wedding"
"September 16th 1615 - They're dead! Every last one of them is dead! It’s all gone, all for nothing. Nothing left, nothing for me. They killed them all! My daughters! But...have I not done the same? I've destroyed entire families, I have taken husbands, sons and brothers and swept them from the mortal plane.
Kami-sama, what am I?
No more, I can't and I won't. There is nothing left for me to fight for. All I have now is my sword, my armor and the overwhelming desire to drink until I die. Kami-sama, send your shinigami and take me from this place and to the hell where I belong!"
"January 12th 1620 .I can't help but write, I need to so I can contain my madness
The moonlight shines off this cold, sharp steel.
As the blood runs down, I tell myself it's nothing that I feel.
That deep pain in my heart that cries out for sleep.
I look with silent eyes, as inside I weep.
Tis but a moment, the fleeting feeling comes,
I move onward, and do what must be done.
One more person my blade must slay,
I will not see tomorrow, for I shall die today.
I shut my eyes and bear my sword, and silently I cry,
This is for those that I have wrongfully slain, this ends the life of a samurai."
Death & Arrival To Soul Society:
This is where the story hits a big fork in the road. There are two tales to how Naki died, the truth and what he remembers in his drunken haze.
Naki: They're the same I tell ya!
Hush you or I'll make you write this.
Fine! I'll do it. It'll be more accurate then your version anyway.
It was the winter of 1620 and I was stationed along the coast near Edo. I was commanding a small group of expert samurai. We were diligently watching the coastline when an arrow struck down one of my closest men, Shuichi (Lovely singing voice but the most unusual sexual tastes). Though we acted quickly, all of my men were fatally wounded. I pretended to be dead until the enemy showed themselves. Angered by the loss of my men I began to decimate the ranks, bodies flying in every direction as I swept my mighty buster sword to and fro. Then I....
Hold on a sec, the buster sword? Who do you think you are, Cloud?
He stole the idea from me, but I digress
As I was saying:
Though I was much stronger, faster and sexier than my opponents were, they had the advantage of numbers on me. Their leader, General Mao Tse-Tung and his pet dragon Mushu captured me. They took me on board their boat and we sailed out into the middle of the ocean. Out in the harsh and unforgiving currents they cast me, in full bushido armor I may add, out to the mercy of the seas. Despite my attempts to escape I found they had bound my hands and feet. Obviously I drowned and was brought to the Soul Society.
Are you done?
Yes
Good, now that we've got your obligatory copyright infringement done, I can tell the real story.
The events of that fateful night in January were something more fitting to the information we already know about Naki at this period of time.
As one might expect he was in a bar, drinking his ass off; as he would often do on...every night and most days too, and screaming about how he used to be a great warrior. Of course no drunken rant would be complete without props so he had brought his old armor with him.
This night he was hitting the sake pretty hard even for a chronic alcoholic. After a series of drinks and boasts he ended up leaving the bar fully clad in his armor. He started off home, forgetting that he lived in town and not by the water. His drunken wandering eventually found him at one of the nearby docks. Through the haze of sake he believed he saw a mermaid drowning. Read that back a few times - he thought the mermaid was drowning. Shortly after he leaped from the pier (still in full armor) and sank. Like a brick. He did not immediately notice this - not even when his spirit saw his own lifeless body. He wandered around for a little while before he was discovered by a shinigami and sent to the Soul Society.
Birth of Reiatsu:
Naki’s spiritual powers had begun to develop long before he died. As a child he often made friends with the ghosts that roamed the grounds of the temple where he lived. Believing them to be imaginary friends, his family shrugged it off as the follies of youth. Though they stayed with him into his life as an adult, he dismissed them and tried his best to ignore them.
His latent ability surfaced again after his first battle. Sitting with his back against the worn trunk of an age-old forest he watched with terror filled eyes as the spirits of his fallen comrades were devoured by a group of hollows. He attributed this sight, and that of the shinigami dispatching the hollows, to battle fatigue.
In his last years the sighting of spirits became more and more common for Naki but he was convinced they were nothing more than hallucinations from the gratuitous amounts of sake in his blood. Well...to be fair most of them actually were but that’s beside the point. He continued to ignore the skills that rested within him, choosing instead to squander his life away on alcohol.
It was only after he was recognized in Soul Society by souls he had seen as ghosts, that he realized he had a Reiatsu. The power that had slowly been leaking from him for his entire life suddenly broke free. Even so, he was slow to realize what he was gifted with. It was still years before he would enroll in the Academy.
Academy Years:
Naki’s time at the academy was quite normal. Content to pass with the minimal amount of effort Naki would often spend his classes writing or designing new martial art techniques. The kidous were fairly easy for him to learn but he chose to spend most of his training focusing on learning new schools of martial arts. He passed his classes with average marks and moved on to the second year.
Year 2 at the academy brought around an unexpected change in Naki. Following a particularly intense solo workout he began to formulate a new style of martial arts. Halfway through his second year he founded his own dojo and began teaching his personal style of martial arts that he called Denkousekka Kaiken Higi [Lightning Speed Dagger Hidden Technique]. This style involved techniques based around speed and short bladed weapons including sais, kamas, neko-te and knives. Despite this added distraction Naki managed to keep his marks at a steady level and was admitted to the third year.
During his third year Naki was injured by a fellow student during a kidou practice. Though he temporarily lost the use of his right arm; he continued his training and teaching duties. By this time his dojo comprised of himself and 11 other students. Meeting daily in a training field near the 11th division headquarters, the small group honed their skills and took great pride in knowing techniques for which there were no known counters. After a lengthy discussion, the 14th Division (for they thought of themselves as such) agreed to keep the style between them so that no one else would ever learn their secrets. Confident in their hidden skills they progressed into their 4th year.
The fourth year was filled with sadness for the members of the 14th Division. During a combat exercise an older student mortally wounded their youngest member, Sansetsu Hitaru. Filled with rage, the rest of the 14th Division mourned the loss of their most promising member. In memory, Naki began to wear the 5 earrings that had once belonged to Hitaru. From then on the 14th Division was inseparable. The remaining 11 set up their own “headquarters” of sorts in Seireti and used the area to live and train. As the founder of the Division, Naki was given the title “Taichou” by the others and was called by it even at the academy.
It was not until the 5th year that the instructors began to notice “Nagura-taichou” and his followers. Despite numerous attempts by the teachers, they refused to divulge any information about the 14th Division or Rajin Kaiken. Naki finally started to apply himself in practices, amazing his proctors with his skills with a sword and in the martial arts. Even his Hadous began to improve. Although he still held himself back somewhat, he showed that he was nowhere near an average soul.
Naki continued to improve his skills throughout his final year. The instructors could hardly believe that the one they had labeled as the screw-up had such talent. The final exam was Naki’s ultimate proof to all that he was much more than he appeared. Muramaki Hoshiko, one of Naki’s examiners, recalls the battle clearly.
“He looked pale and frightened when he came out, his whole body was trembling like a leaf. We all figured that he would lose quickly. His opponent was near the top of the class and from one of the more prestigious families. They faced off, swords drawn but neither one wanting to make the first move. I’ll never forget what happened next. Nagura-san just yelled “Kakeru Bashirisuku” and his sword morphed into a claw bracer. It was unbelievable, I can’t say that any of us expected him to be able to perform his shikai even with the skills he had displayed in his classes. But, there was something different about him. He no longer shook and his eyes, oh god his eyes, they just stared at his opponent with no emotion at all. It was over before the other student had a chance to react. So much blood…it was every where. Nagura-san had killed him and he just stood there, blood covering his blades. And he was laughing, covered in blood and laughing! We’d taken him as a fool for 6 years and this was how he repaid us… It’s scary just how strong he can be when he wants to be.”
Though troubled by his actions during the battle and his eerie calmness during the other exams, the examiners passed Naki and accepted his application to the 3rd Division
Shinigami Years:
After graduation, Naki joined the 3rd division. In light of his unique performance in his exams he was awarded 10th seat. Many of the other members from the 14th Division also joined the 3rd Division with the rest enlisting in the 2nd Division.
Content with his position, Naki fell back into his cycle of doing the least amount of work possible. Though this led to subsequent demotions, his performance in dire times eventually brought him to a position as the 4th seat of 3rd division.
During his time in the 3rd Division, Naki began to regard Gin as a sort of role model. Although he never admitted it openly, he had a deep respect for his captain. Naki even quit drinking so as to better prove himself to Gin. His new attitude and dedication earned him the position of 3rd seat.
Centuries passed as he remained in his position with the 3rd Division. While other Shinigami shifted around, changing from division to division, Naki liked the stability he had found with his peers. The division became a family to him and he was very distrusting of new arrivals. Though he worked hard, he was pleased to remain as the 3rd seat and never thought about taking the role of Fuku-Taichou or even Taichou.
Recent Years:
After Gin's betrayal and departure, Naki found himself unexpectedly without a captain. Angered by his mentor's traitorous actions and nervous about his future he lapsed back into his habit of heavy drinking. The 14th Division aided their Taichou and, in time, managed to return him to a more sober state.
Sober and serious once more, Naki put his time into preparing for the Taichou's exam. Training became more intense and he shut out all other aspects of his life, focussing his core on the test. Fueled by the desire to become better than the one person he had truly trusted he set about trying to preform his bankai. Days passed and changed to weeks as he trained until his body ached. Two days before the examination he succeeded and released his Bankai. The strain knocked him unconscious and he remained at his secluded training ground for the better part of 2 days.
After his unforeseen delay Naki raced to the test area, using his speed to arrive only...slightly late. With a black mark already against him, he struggled through the kidou testing but managed to pull a pass out of it. The written exam was another hurdle that he managed to pass, although it was somewhat close. A look of triumph spread across his face as he entered the combat testing stage. His skill in numerous schools of martial arts evened out his tardiness and average performance in the earlier trials. The last test came, the preforming of his Bankai. Somewhat unsteady on his feet, Naki released his spirit, flooding the area in a foot of water. Caught by a mixture of hydrophobia and stress he lost control of his power and passed out again.
Waking up in the 4th Division Headquarters he was informed that his application for Taichou was being held under consideration. It seemed he had not been the only one to apply for the position. Anxious about the results he waited in the 3rd Division Headquarters, talking with his longtime squad mates.
When the result came that Naki had been appointed 3rd Division Taichou there was a great party at the Headquarters. Although his skills were unbalanced, it had been determined that he was qualified for the Taichou position. His loyalty and familiarity with the 3rd Division (which he had been stationed with for almost 300 years at that point) had been a contributing factor to his approval.
Already branded a drunkard by some members of the Gotei 13, Naki chose to keep the other captains under the impression that he was usually drunk. Though held in low regard by many, Yamamoto-Genryuusai Shigekuni and Naki's own Fuku-Taichou were the only two outside the 14th Division who knew the truth behind his actions.
Over the next 5 years, Naki worked hard to turn the 3rd Division into a more efficient combat division. Training routines were increased and more varied styles of combat began to be taught. not wanting to set a bad example for his subordinates, Naki also participated in the rigorous training.
Fueled by a mild paranoia, Naki shrouded the 3rd Division in secrecy. Details of the Division's increasing training were released only to Shigekuni. One fact that Naki did dot release was in regards to the instruction of Denkousekka Kaiken Higi [Lightning Speed Dagger Hidden Technique]. This is the one thing that Naki feels no one but the 3rd Division should know.
Personality:On the surface, Naki appears to be a typical irresponsible drunk. Fortunately for him, it goes much further than that. His current mental situation stems from events in his first life that drove him to start hitting the “juice”. Yet he does manage to surprise people and get his work done efficiently - no one is sure how yet.
Within Naki lie two very separate personalities. Drunk and Sober, also known as Happy and …Sane. When under the effects of large amounts of Sake, Naki’s kleptomania rises to the surface. In such a state anything shiny or dealing with hair (hats, gel, hairspray, curlers, etc) become an open target.
His drunken side embodies the more positive half of him. He may be highly irresponsible and horde hair care items but he provides some form of amusement. While intoxicated everything is his friend - literally, he makes friends with inanimate objects...don't ask how, he is very friendly.
Then there is the serious side of him, the lesser-seen side, the side he tries to drink into oblivion. As a samurai in the early stages of the Edo era, Naki committed his fair share of atrocities against his enemies. In his pre-drinking life, he was a devoted fighter for the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu and obediently followed every order without question. After some disturbing personal incidents he was given a chance to look back at his life. The realization of his sins drove the poor fighter partially insane. He began to drink, hoping to kill that part of him.
At first glance, Naki is just how he looks, a drunken fool with too much rank for anyone's good. Deep within him lies the soul of a warrior if he ever decides to reawaken his past. His value in friends is the only thing that would push him to such a length. Maybe he can be more than just the obligatory fool of the Gotei 13
When in a serious situation Naki’s darker side takes control. His fighting soul relishes in the heat of battle and has some habits, which creep a lot of people out. This side of him is extremely violent and cold-hearted, taking great joy from crushing his opponents. Under this persona Naki fights to the death and is not satisfied until his foe lies died on the ground
Well, I guess we should focus on some of his good points...try and even things out a bit.
In truth Naki is no where near as drunk as he makes himself out to be. He uses his social drinking and free spirit as a tool to mislead his enemies...and his friends. It’s the tool of a lazy overachiever; he hides behind the cloak of his supposed alcoholism, using it as an excuse for his laziness.
That isn't to say that there isn't alcohol in him at all times, there is. The thing that is hidden is the true proportion of the booze to body ratio. It is drastically lower than Naki lets others believe. This explains his ability to mysteriously complete his work properly and on time
Strengths: Once called "The Lightning Samurai", Naki is an expert on speed fighting. He combines unconditional movements with dizzying speed to confuse his opponents. Added to this is his natural resilience to shallow wounds and not letting them affect his performance in battle.
His time spent as a Samurai in the Edo period gifted Naki with considerable skills as a swordsman. Even with his zanpakutou sealed, he is still able to fight at a considerably high level. As a samurai Naki learned many different styles of martial arts. His body and mind were naturally receptive to fighting and he mastered styles quickly. Over the years Naki became proficient in Jujutsu, Kendo, Ninjutsu, Shinkendo, and Taijtusu. While the list may seem excessive it is important to remember that Naki has spent his entire life and even his time in Soul Society studying these techniques.
Weaknesses: First and foremost, Naki's love of alcohol plays a large role in the hampering of his power. While he is gifted with extraordinary speed he lacks the control (IE. braking, turning) to use it at its maximum potential. Sake compounds this problem, severely reducing his accuracy while intoxicated.
Because of the circumstances regarding his death, Naki has extreme aquaphobia. This wouldn't be so much of a problem if his sword weren’t infused with a water dwelling spirit. This fear holds Naki back from using his bankai often. To date he has only preformed it twice and nearly passed out on both occasions.
Naki's power is mainly focussed into his speed. This unfortunately makes the ratio between speed and power very disproportionate. While he can strike multiple times in the time it takes an average shinigami to strike once, his strikes amount to about the same as another captain's single blow.
Gin’s betrayal gave Naki a slight case of paranoia. Not wanting to be betrayed again, Naki is suspicious of everyone. This does affect his ability to form some relationships but it is luckily not too visible.
Weapons/Powers :::Zanpakutou::
Zanpakutou Name: Iesu Sekieki [Jesus Lizard]
Zanpakutou Sealed Description: The weary blade is covered with nicks and chips from past battles. The blade is a perfect metre in length. The backside of the blade is coated in a thin gold finish, causing the sword to shine bright in the midst of combat. The hilt is sharkskin covered by overlapping layers of black silk. The guard is a solid polished steel engraved with the reliefs of intertwining snakes. The hilt ends in a metal curve, styled to resemble the tail of a lizard.
Incantation To Release: kakeru bashirisuku [Run, Basilisk]
Zanpakutou Shikai Description:
Naki's shikai is a single claw bracer. With 3 razor sharp blades it is well suited for the rapid blow style of attack that Naki favors. The grip is tight around his fingers which lowers his chances of being disarmed.
His Shikai technique is Kaiken Odori [Dagger Dance]. Moving at top speed, Naki literally disappears from site momentarily. During this immense speed boost he performs multiple slashes with his Zanpuktou. Though the blows are numerous they are quite shallow. While not as serious as a single deep wound, this technique is capable of causing the target to suffer heavy bleeding. Due to the physical strain on his body while preforming this move it can only be used so many times during a battle before exhausting Naki.
Zanpakutou Bankai Description:
In Bankai form Naki’s Shikai takes the shape of a multibladed bracer. Bonded to his left hand (for he is a lefty) the short blades extend from a spiked leather band that wraps around his arm just before his wrist. Two smaller blades protrude out at a 60 degree angle. At the front another 2 larger blades flank his hand, producing a claw specialized for defense and attack.
When in Bankai Naki can preform his final attack Kaiken Odori Taki [Dagger Dance Waterfall] Upon incantation Naki traps his target in water up to their knees. True to the nature of his Zanpuktou's spirit he physically runs across the water and strikes with such speed that solid waves follow each blow. Naki finishes after striking his opponent 64 times. As with his shikai, the wounds are more to induce high levels of bleeding. Because of the combined physical and mental strain, Naki is weakened after using this technique.
Zanpakutou Type: Elemental -Water-
Zanpakutou Spirit: Inside Naki's blade resides the spirit of a Basilisk. Iesu Sekieki is a small, jet colored lizard with a golden streak from nose to tail. It's red eyes glow with a malignant energy. Though quite diminutive in size it is easy to recognize the power held by Iesu Sekieki.
Zanpakutou Personality: Iesu Sekieki is trickster and a rogue, often teasing Naki, especially during battles. Iesu often berates Naki if he is failing or having trouble with any task. Despite this, he also throws tidbits of information to Naki, helping him to survive some of his most difficult situations.
Inner World: Iesu Sekieki's world is almost completely made of water which scares the hell out of Naki. The path through the inner world is harrowing for Naki; walking across the violent waves troubled him so much that he almost gave up on learning the name of his sword. In the center of the whirlpool lies a small patch of land filled by a bamboo grove. Iesu Sekieki sits in the middle of this growth, diligently guarding what little stability exists in the maelstrom.
Likes: Women, Sake, and reading
Dislikes: Pompous people, certain mazoku...

Sample RP:
Naki smiled softly under the light off the moon. He missed the summer nights of the mortal plane. Twirling a cherry blossom between two fingers, he closed his eyes and let out a soft breath. The tell tale ring of the Soul Society rang from the pager. He rose with a small smile on his tanned face. A hollow had decided to crash his peace; he could not let such a rude interruption stand unchallenged.
Taking a piece of soul candy, he entrusted his ginkai to the mod soul. Free from his physical restraints he moved casually down the deserted street. A cold grin spread across his face as the samurai rose up in him. An old prayer, one his first commanding officer told him before the battle of Sekigahara, fell from his lips as he approached his quarry.
"In the name of Chaos
Thy will be done
Thy win be mine
Mine blade be sure
Mine heart be true
In the name of Chaos
I entrust
Amen"
The hollow turned to face the intruder and let out an almighty roar upon realizing the presence of a shinigami. Naki's face fell into an emotionless mask as his hand wrenched his sword from its home. The blade slid into line with the ungodly hollow's grotesque mask.
"Cry all you want Hollow, nothing can protect you now. Accept your punishment and blame your fate!"
Naki's mask flickered as a look of hatred ran across it. His fingers gripped the hilt of Iesu Sekieki as his steel eyes narrowed. His voice was cold as ice, devoid of any semblance of feeling.
"Kakeru Bashirisuku"
His blade twisted and warped around his hand, forming the long slender blades of Naki's shikai. His legs tensed and rapidly relaxed as he sprung forward with claws outstretched. The tips raked the hollow's flesh and sent blood spilling everywhere. The hollow unleashed a deafening bellow as Naki slowly licked the blood from his blades.
"Too slow Hollow"
The bandages fell from his right arm to reveal a complex set of black tattoos. Suddenly they began to glow an ethereal blue, bathing the street in their light. The captain shimmered and vanished from the Hollow's sight. Seconds later he materialized behind the evil spirit. Black blood dripped silently from the razor tips that protruded from Naki's hand. Blood burst from all over the hollow's body, covering Naki in dark splashes.
The hollow dispatched, Naki sank to his knees, perspiration dripping from his forehead. Trembling, he retied the bandages around his arm as the ink returned to its resting black. He stood, shaking slightly.
"Just one more kill...."
His face returned to its normal complacent expression as he leaned back against a nearby wall. Slowly he returned his sword to its sheath, closing his eyes slightly.
"Rest in peace...."
He coughed and spat out some of the Hollow’s blood, the crimson liquid trickling from the corner of his mouth.
“By your blood, take my place in hell…”

Weapons/Powers :::Zanpakutou::
